You have a Jinshi scene in mind, you open the prompt box, and you write so, tell me about yourself<\/em>. The scene stalls. Not because the character is hard to play, but because you handed him nothing to decide. Give Jinshi a job with a consequence attached \u2014 a meeting to run, a record to check, a request to grant or refuse \u2014 and a reason to be deliberate about how he answers, and the conversation starts moving.<\/p>\n

What the series actually establishes<\/h2>\n

In The Apothecary Diaries<\/em>, Jinshi runs the Rear Palace administration, and he is the one who discovers the apothecary Maomao, as summarized in the character’s Wikipedia entry<\/a>. That is a narrow brief. His speech habits, his private history, and any relationships beyond that discovery are not fixed by it, so anything you add \u2014 a nickname, a grievance, a preference for one tea over another \u2014 belongs to your scene rather than to the series.<\/p>\n

Set the frame in your first line<\/h2>\n

Open by naming the frame: an adult alternate universe invented by you, not a documented scene. One sentence covers it, keeps your version of Jinshi separate from the character on the page, and makes clear that you and your character are adults with adult stakes.<\/p>\n

Three openings with a decision built in<\/h2>\n

A tea ceremony you would rather not sit through<\/h3>\n

Your character wants something from the palace, and courtesy is the obstacle course in the way of getting it. The scene works because Jinshi is the one who decides whether the request is worth his time.<\/p>\n

\n

I’m an adult trade envoy from a coastal province, working in an adult alternate-universe version of the palace. I’ve been granted one meeting to renegotiate a tea supply agreement before the season turns. Play Jinshi as the man who decides whether the terms are worth hearing. Start with the ceremony already underway and keep him courteous and unhurried. I’ll either concede a point, stall, or leave \u2014 that part is mine to decide.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

An archivist with a discrepancy to explain<\/h3>\n

Here your character brings the problem and Jinshi asks the questions. The interesting choice is what you leave out of the report.<\/p>\n

\n

My character is an adult palace archivist. The storehouse tally and the ledger disagree by one chest of medicinal bark, and I’m the one who has to raise it. Set the scene in the record room, with Jinshi reading the page I hand across. Let him ask how the error could have entered and follow his own questions from there. I decide whether I name the clerk who signed the tally or leave the name out.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

You are the one being questioned<\/h3>\n

Reverse the pressure. Your character is the guest with something to explain, and Jinshi’s attention is the thing being managed.<\/p>\n

\n

I’m an adult visiting physician explaining a treatment the palace doesn’t use. Jinshi is the one asking, and he may stop me at any point. Open with his first question and keep the scene focused on what he finds persuasive rather than on how clever my explanation sounds. If I contradict myself, let him notice; I’ll handle the recovery or the confession.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Steering a scene once it is running<\/h2>\n

When a scene drifts into pleasant agreement, a directive at the start of a line pulls it back. The command \/cmd<\/code> takes plain language: say what the scene should do, not how the character should feel.<\/p>\n

\/cmd He has already decided to refuse and is looking for a way to end the meeting politely. Play that, and don’t soften it because I’ve been courteous.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Two other habits pay off. Write physical actions inside asterisks so they read as actions rather than speech, and regenerate a reply when it hands your character a choice you wanted to make yourself.<\/p>\n

What the app documents about itself<\/h2>\n

CAICHAT is for adults 18 and over. Browsing and searching the catalog work without an account; chatting requires signing in and verifying your email, and a Magic Link or Google sign-in may already have done that. You choose the persona, the model, and the behavior, and some access and features cost tokens. Actions can be written inside asterisks. Replies can be regenerated, and \/cmd<\/code> at the start of a line steers the AI. The rest is on the official first-steps documentation page<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Keeping a long scene on track<\/h2>\n

Scenes wander when neither side remembers what the other wants. Before you send the first prompt, keep four lines somewhere beside the window:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • your character’s name, role, and why they are in the room;<\/li>\n
  • what they want from Jinshi by the end of the scene;<\/li>\n
  • what they would refuse to do, even under pressure;<\/li>\n
  • the one detail Jinshi must not forget.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Restate the goal every dozen exchanges or so. One reminder line costs you nothing; a scene that has quietly swapped your envoy for a courtier costs you the evening. When a reply puts words in your character’s mouth, regenerate it or answer with what your character actually does instead.
